Jessica Pegula became the first player into the quarterfinals of this year's Wuhan Open on Thursday afternoon, battling past Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first third-round match of the day, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.

And with that, Pegula pulls off a nifty stat—she's now reached the quarterfinals or better at all 10 current WTA 1000 events in her career.

Wuhan was the only one missing from her collection. Before this year, her best result at the event was a third-round finish last year.

PEGULA'S BEST RESULTS BY CURRENT WTA 1000 EVENT:

  • QFs of Doha (2025)
  • SFs of Dubai (2023)
  • QFs of Indian Wells (2021)
  • F of Miami (2025)
  • F of Madrid (2022)
  • QFs of Rome (2021)
  • Won Canada (2023, 2024)
  • F of Cincinnati (2024)
  • SFs of Beijing (2025)
  • QFs of Wuhan (2025)

And to extend it even further, Pegula has now made the quarterfinals or better at the 15 biggest tournaments currently on the calendar—all four Grand Slam events, the WTA Finals and all 10 WTA 1000s.

Getting to the last eight in Wuhan was a battle, though, as Alexandrova didn't just win the second set, she had chances in the other two, as well.

Pegula was down 5-2 in the first set before reeling off five games in a row to sneak it out—she was then down a break early in the third set too, at 2-1, before breaking back and eventually sneaking that one out.

In the end, though, Pegula was just too good in the most important moments of the match, finishing Alexandrova off after two hours and six minutes on center court, and dealing a severe blow to the world No. 11's chances at qualifying for the WTA Finals in Riyadh.

"Every time we've played each other it's always a match like this—super close, three sets almost every single time," Pegula said in her on-court interview. "I feel like it's one of those match-ups where we tend to play into each other's games. We like the way we hit the ball and we start getting into a rhythm, and start playing at a really high level.

"At the end I tried to mix it up a little bit as much as I could, and try and do some things different. It's tricky though—she was playing at such a high level and she's had such an amazing year. I don't know if she's Top 10 yet but she's close, and she's just an amazing player."

Awaiting the No. 6-seeded Pegula in the quarterfinals on Friday will be one of two unseeded players—Katerina Siniakova, who just reached a big ranking milestone this week, or American teenager Iva Jovic.

Pegula has a big chance of qualifying for the WTA Finals depending on how the rest of the week goes in Wuhan. She can qualify outright by winning the title, regardless of everyone else's results.
