Juan Martin del Potro has withdrawn from the Madrid Masters because of a viral infection, organizers announced.
The world No. 7 also pulled out of this week's Portugal Open and was said to be vomiting. Del Potro has begun to lightly practice again, but it is unclear whether he will be able to compete in Rome, which begins the week after Madrid. Even so, he should be safe for a top eight seed at Roland Garros unless No. 9 Richard Gasquet or No. 10 Janko Tipsarevic produce significant results in the next few weeks.
Belgium's David Goffin will take del Potro's place in the main draw.
