Simona Halep says she is still looking to compete at the WTA Finals, but would not commit to the tournament following her retirement in Beijing with an ankle injury.
The World No. 2 said she had been having problems with the injury in her previous two events, but began experiencing much more pain in her opening match at Beijing, where she retired 5-4 down in the first set.
"That's why I stopped today,” she said. “I didn't think it would become like this. I just don't feel well with my tendon right now.”
Halep has qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore, but said that while she’s been aiming to play the tournament the whole season, she will only do so if healthy.
"Of course, every tournament is important,” she said. “But the most important thing is to be OK, to feel no pain, and then I will see. (It) was my goal for this year. I will see. I need treatment and I need a break, for sure."
No. 1 Serena Williams has announced that she has withdrawn from Singapore.
