The Russian announced two months ago that she tested positive for meldonium—a drug which increases blood circulation—at the Australian Open in January. Sharapova said she had taken it for 10 years for medical reasons, and did not know it had been banned at the beginning of this season.

A decision by the independent tribunal would usually take a few weeks. The date of the hearing has not been confirmed, as there have been some conflicting reports.

More than 250 athletes have tested positive for the substance since the ban, according to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
