It's official: Djokovic joins Murray on Miami Open sidelines

What was earlier reported is now official: Defending champion and world No. 2 Novak Djokovic is unable to play at the Miami Open.

In a Facebook post, Djokovic offered more details around the extent of the injury, and how important Miami is to him.

He joins Andy Murray on the sidelines as the world No. 1 will also be missing the second Masters Series event of the year due to an elbow injury.

Like Murray, Djokovic fell early in Indian Wells, losing to Australian Nick Kyrgios for the second time in three weeks. The world’s top two players have each won a title this season—Murray in Dubai and Djokovic in Doha. But at the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open, six-time champion Djokovic went out in the second round to Denis Istomin, while Murray—a five-time finalist—lost to Mischa Zverev in the fourth round.

More players are charging up behind Murray and Djokovic, with Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer leading the charge. Both of the Swiss have made deep runs in this week’s tournament in Indian Wells, and can possibly make more gains in the standings if they replicate their success in California.
