Novak Djokovic says that reuniting with his old coach, Marian Vajda, has given him a lot of motivation.

The pair had been training together in Marbella before Monte Carlo, where Djokovic easily won his opener—the Serb's first victory since the Australian Open.

"He knows me better than any tennis coach I've worked with," Djokovic told press at Monte Carlo. "He's a friend. He's someone I can share a lot of things with, whether it's professional or private life.

"He's always there for me. He knows what I need in order to get to the highest possible level of play. We could not ask for a better start.

"The first practice we had, that's what I felt. I felt safe on the court, I felt motivated, a lot of great things. We're going to both work to keep it that way."

But Djokovic repeated that the two "don't have any kind of long-term commitment with each other" yet.

Vajda, who is in Monte Carlo, had been Djokovic's longtime mentor until Djokovic fired his entire team a year ago following a string of poor performances.

The former No. 1 recently split with his subsequent coaches, Andre Agassi and Radek Stepanek. He indicated it was his decision.

"I didn't know in which direction I wanted to go after Indian Wells and Miami," Djokovic said. "I didn't want to keep them in, so to say, the dark in a way, being indecisive."

It was Agassi who announced their split, issuing a statement to ESPN during its Miami broadcast. When Djokovic issued his own statement the following week, he mentioned that he still had a warm personal relationship with Stepanek, but had just a single mention of Agassi.

But Djokovic insisted that he was still on good terms with the American, also noting that they had not had a formal, paid coaching relationship.

"No, I mean, look, Andre was giving an interview, as I understand, in ESPN," he said. "We talked about it.

"I mean, I don't care about the game, who comes in and says things in the press first. I mean, nobody offended anybody. We're still in a very good relation."

There have been suggestions that Agassi did not agree with Djokovic's decision to return at Indian Wells, where he fell in the first round, or to then play Miami.

Djokovic acknowledged he might have rushed his decision to play a little bit but said he is now fit to compete.

"But today, you know, pain-free. Obviously having Marian is a lot of positive emotions, as I said," he noted. "Physically I think I'm getting in a better shape as the weeks go by."
