"Most fun I had on a tennis court in months": Zverev on Acapulco run

Alexander Zverev says he's back on a roll with a title victory in Acapulco.

The 23-year-old German called the week "the most fun I had on a tennis court in months, a few years maybe" as he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in front of a small but loud group of spectators to lift the trophy for the first time at the event.

Zverev reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open, won consecutive titles in Cologne and reached the final of the Paris Masters in 2020, but appeared to be playing even better in Acapulco.

"I'm looking forward to the next tournaments, definitely," he said on court.

He hadn't won a 500-level title or higher since 2018, when he ended that season by claiming the ATP Finals.

"It’s great achievement for me. You come to play tournaments to win tournaments," Zverev told press. "I have done that this week. I am extremely happy with that. The main goal is still the biggest titles in the world."

Not even an earthquake during his semifinal victory knocked him off course.

"I didn't know what happened. We just heard the crowd. The lights started shaking. We didn't feel much. We actually finished the point during the earthquake," he said.

Zverev was playing a 23rd ATP final, including a defeat in Acapulco in 2019.

"Obviously it's about winning them," he said. "I think a lot has happened since then. As a tennis player I've evolved, as a person I've evolved. But the goal is still the same, to win the biggest tournaments in a world. "

The world No. 7 now heads to Miami, where he will be seeded third as a result of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem and Roger Federer all opting out of the tournament.
