The editors of TENNIS Magazine and TENNIS.com weigh in with their predictions on who will be victorious at the 2008 Pacific Life Open.
James Martin, Editor in Chief
"Andy Roddick-- Yes, yes, we've seen Roddick regain his fire for a small tournament recently Dubai and letting his opponents dictate. But Roddick beat some big names in one desert (Nadal, Djokovic) and the confidence from those wins should carry over to this desert."
"Maria Sharapova-- Without Justine Henin or the Williams sisters, Sharapova's biggest threats will be Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic, and . . . .Lindsay Davenport? Don't see much that can stop the Australian Open champion if she continues to serve well and remain healthy through the tournament.
Jon Levey, Senior Editor
"Roger Federer-- Good opportunity for him to silence the increasingly noisy critics."
"Lindsay Davenport-- She’s won some small events since making her comeback, but it’s time for her to take one with a strong field."
Tom Perrotta, Senior Editor
"Roger Federer-- It’s been a long time since it was something of a gamble to pick Federer to win a tournament. He lost his first match here last year and is on a two-match losing streak (unless you count Monday’s victory over Pete Sampras at Madison Square Garden). Federer can gain a lot of ranking points here and show the rest of the tour that he’s still the man to beat with a win. Unless he has an off day early, he’ll be tough to beat. Long-shot winner: David Nalbandian"
"Maria Sharapova-- I know, I know, it’s a bold prediction, considering Sharapova hasn’t lost a match all year. But without the Williams sisters or Justine Henin to stop her, I don’t see anyone standing between her and a 20-0 record. Surprise finalist: Lindsay Davenport."
Sarah Unke, Associate Editor
"Roger Federer-- It’s time for Federer to increase the distance between himself and the fast-approaching Rafael Nadal. He lost in his first match last year, so he’s got motivation and a great opportunity to get his points up.
"Ana Ivanovic-- After two Slam finals, a title at an event as big as Indian Wells could give this Serb the confidence to go out and grab her first major victory. With a severely depleted women’s field (seven of the Top 20 are sitting out), Ivanovic should have a shot."
Sarah Thurmond, Assistant Editor
"Ana Ivanovic-- She’s recovered from an ankle injury, and is due for her first win this season. Most likely she’ll face in the final a tired Maria Sharapova, who ought to be pushed pretty hard in her half of the draw by Daniela Hantuchova (sure, she’s only beaten Sharapova once in seven meetings, but she’ll be motivated to perform well with a title defense on the line) in the quarterfinals, and then Kuznetsova in the semis."
"Roger Federer-- Hard to believe it’s March and Rog’s biggest win so far this season came in an exhibition against Pete Sampras. If this mano a mono business is to be believed, and he truly is back at full strength, I see him showing the young guns he’s still the boss."
