Numbers Game: 10 striking Wimbledon TV ratings

By Kamakshi Tandon

13.1 million*
The peak number of British viewers who watched the 4-hour, 48-minute men's final between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer on BBC 1. The evening news was moved to BBC 2 to allowed continued coverage of the match, which was repeatedly interrupted by rain and finished at 9:16 pm.

The British Grand Prix, held earlier in the day and won by Briton Lewis Hamilton, attracted a peak of 6 million viewers. Britain's highest-rated television sports broadcast so far this year has been the soccer Champions League final, which topped out at over 14.5 million.

Population of Great Britain: 61 million

4.5 million The peak number of Spanish viewers who watched Nadal's win, less than the 5.7 million who tuned in for the British Grand Prix. Spaniard Fernando Alonso was expected to be a contender in the Formula 1 car race. Taking the post-match figures into account, however, lifted the Wimbledon peak to 7 million.
                                                                                 Population of Spain: 40 million

1.12 million     The peak number of Swiss viewers who watched Federer's loss. The previous high had been his first Wimbledon victory in 2003, which attracted an average of 545,000 people.

                                                                                 Population of Switzerland: 7.6 million

2.32 million     The peak number of French viewers who saw the five-set Wimbledon final, the record for a Wimbledon broadcast on Canal+ but below the 4.2 million who watched the one-sided French Open final a month ago. French viewership for the French Open peaked at 7.4 million for the semifinal between Federer and Frenchman Gael Monfils.
                                                                                 Population of France: 64 million

10.5 million     The peak number of British viewers who saw Andy Murray come from two sets down to defeat Richard Gasquet in the fourth round. It was about equal to the (average) viewing figures for the final of Euro 2008 between Spain and Germany the previous day, which attracted 10.6 million.

4.5 million     The peak number of British viewers for the girl's final on Saturday, won by Laura Robson of Britain. That's more than the 3.5 million who watched the women's final between Venus and Serena Williams earlier that afternoon.

4.6/12     NBC's US ratings for the men's final (numbers measure the percentage of homes with televisions watching the match/percentage share of total TV audience at the time). It was an increase of over 43% percent from last year's final, which also featured a five-set match between Federer and Nadal, but in less dramatic circumstances.

3.4/10     NBC's US ratings for the women's final. It was a 21% jump from last year, but lower than a dramatic three-set final between Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport, which received a 4.0/12.

0.5         The ratings reported by ESPN for its first seven days of coverage from Wimbledon, an increase of 24% from last year's 0.4. The figure represents about 510,000 homes.

100 million     The reported viewership figures in China for Jie Zheng's semifinal against Serena Williams.
                                                                                   Population of China: 1.3 billion

*Note: the BBC itself reported the peak as 12.7 million.
