The Top 50 U.S. Tennis Resorts of 2008

------------------- Go to: Resorts 1-4 | Resorts 5-8 | Resorts 9-10 | The Rest of the Best -------------------

It feels like everyone’s working harder these days, but we’re not getting any extra time off to go along with it. For tennis players, this means you have only so many chances to hit the courts. You need to choose your vacation destination wisely.

Resort #6
Topnotch Resort and Spa in Stowe, Vt., ranked sixth on our list.
This is the place to start. Our biennial list of the Top 50 U.S. tennis resorts tells us we’re living in a Golden Age of destinations for the sport. We’re not just talking about luxury retreats, but also more modest resorts where a passion for the game makes up for any shortcomings in amenities.

The criteria for inclusion in our list were the same as in previous years. The number of courts and the quality of instruction, clinics, and game-matching are paramount. But a tennis vacation should be an all-around experience, often for families, so we gave consideration to dining, spas, lodging, and other diversions. This information was compiled by veteran travel writer Ian Keown, author of 15 books.

As for the rates, the dollar signs are a general guide. There are now so many factors involved in room rates—seasons, occupancy, packages, online deals—that the fine print could fill an issue of the magazine. But check out rates thoroughly and you’ll find there are some great deals out there. For the Top 10, we’ve picked out a few points of interest that might help make your decision easier.
