2017 Roland Garros: Fashion aces

What damage might Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams have done in the respective draws in Paris? No one will ever know, but another operative question for that fashionable trio was this: What might they have worn on court?For Federer, and for Sharapova and Serena (a real splash, hers), we know those sartorial facts.

The French Open remains a stylish hallmark of the 2017 tennis season. Players' fashion senses surely brighten in the City of Light as spring begins to bend toward summer. Here are the 2017 French Open fashion fantastiques, with the relative fashion faux pas following close behind.

Breaking my rule that orange attire should not be stacked on top of the rouge-orange courts, Dominika Cibulkova begs to differ–and ultimately wins out in a lovely Lacoste number.

Marrying classic, even preppy, and alternative styles on one physique can be incredibly tricky. Fila, with a hearty assist from its top star on the women's side, Karolina Pliskova, makes that mix look striking and (in the best way) simple. Pliskova plays clay-court survivor in matches these days, but she's much more than that as style points go.

Perhaps it's not easy being green, but Adidas adorns flashy stars Dominic Thiem and Lucas Pouille. The verdant shades on their fronts don't whelm visually, as the white backs of their tops serve to break up that hue.

(Green hasn't looked this good on red clay since Serena briefly appeared in it, via Nike, versus Virginie Razzano in 2013's biggest WTA upset.)

Decked out in Adidas, Sania Mirza briefly showed off a top that sincerely screamed "fashion!" before bowing out in round one of French Open mixed-doubles action.

Her tactics with mid-match breaks, catalyzing crowd support and speaking in tongues are not chic, but Kristina Mladenovic unabashedly claims victory in the style arena with her Adidas dress, a textile lesson in fairly subtle splendor.

Marin Cilic has been known to incite sartorial wonderment (in the worst way), but his navy-meets-minty attire at this major finds many clapping, if warily. Still watching you, monsieur.

Nike continues to do right by Rafael Nadal, whose striking hues up top are complemented, if not overtaken, by the best, most deft shoe detail of the tournament.

Eureka! As Lacoste brings Novak Djokovic into its stable of crocodiles and outfits him in possibly the best lanky polo he has worn since his Sergio Tacchini days.

The color-blocking on Stan Wawrinka's polo finds him looking as winsome in primary tones as anyone ever has. Wed with simple white shorts, his sponsor lets that collared top do the talking. Advantage, Yonex.

Uniqlo (Djokovic's former brand) allows Kei Nishikori something of a style moment by emblazoning his otherwise not-so-remarkable deep-green polo with handsome horizontal stripes. The white version: also a winner.

A lover of Diane von Furstenberg wrap dresses, Venus Williams sports her diamond-patterned design, from her eponymous EleVen by Venus line, with grace.

Among all comers who put it on, solely Nick Kyrgios and Elina Svitolina seem to have the game and the swagger to carry off the paint-splattered looks that Nike dealt most of its charges. Its attempt at mimicking how the terre battue kicks up off pros' shoes arrives as noble, and it leaves about as quickly as it can.

A print like that made sense for, say, Trapper Keepers in the 1990s.

Simona Halep's intriguing skirting renders her Roland Garros look a vivacious success. Tres bien, Adidas.

Bob and Mike Bryan, now in Izod, are seeing red in decently flashy garb for such a historically classic brand.

Kevin Anderson and Lotto make blue, yellow and white look like a champion's colorways, sharp and sophisticated.
