2017 Roland Garros: Fashion faults

Senses of style and styles of play come together to clash at Roland Garros each year – and sometimes a kit clashes (yes, crashes) all on its own. Without further ado, here are the fashion foibles out of the 2017 French Open in Paris, the unforced errors that sprang from various athletic-fashion designers. (See the RG17 aces while you're at it.)

Just say no to Agnieszka Radwanska’s "Camoflower" frock from Lotto. Put simply, it looks like a gothic christening dress. Or maybe ready for a wake, which would make sense given her match outcome against Alize Cornet.

Fruit patterns on clothes might work for Williamsburg hipsters. They do not look good on tennis attire. Bethanie Mattek-Sands, those cherries must go. They are literally and figuratively the pits. She's got a deal with Tennis Warehouse, meaning countless options are at her fingertips.

C’est vrai, Stephane Robert appears as a posed flamingo in his pink kit. Not okay.

Svetlana Kuznetsova’s Qiaodan getup finds her behind the times, sartorially speaking. The “perforated” skirting look is so Adidas 2015-16, the colors don’t complement her and it all just ends up an unrefined mess. Sveta should definitely dress funky, but this kit just looks erratic.

Maybe Nike endorser Grigor Dimitrov and Radwanska can split costs and hold a combined funeral for their briefly worn French Open attire.

Gael Monfils and Asics leap high but fall short with a samesy orange-on-orange allusion between his shirt and the terre battue. Not even the mercurial shotmaker can pull off this look, though he should certainly pull it off for good now.

One word for Andy Murray’s on-court style: basic. Under Armour continues to do a disservice to the top-earning, top-returning tennis player in its stable. The strikes of something akin to electric-blue can’t save it. Enough with the black and white; this isn’t a Charlie Chaplin flick.

Heather Watson gets fitted in a New Balance dress that looks as if the tie-dye effect didn’t fully process or her stomach is bleeding blue. Either way, nay.

Mesh tops will always be in the wrong. See you at Wimbledon, Tsvetana Pironkova.

Yaroslava Shvedova and her estwhile doubles partner Timea Babos each suffer in a blasé Fila look, one that seemingly serves to replicate Venus Williams’ winning look at Roland Garros 2016 but ultimately amounted to a double-fault. Fila has been doing a lot right in recent times–and this is not it.
