A lot goes on behind the scenes before a player steps on court and onto your TV. The majority of their day before a match is part of a calculated routine, including eating, resting, warming up, practicing and, in the case of Kiki Bertens, getting taped up by tournament physiotherapists.

You may have noticed that the world No. 9 always has her right ankle taped. She underwent surgery five years ago, and has been pain free, but takes the preventative measures anyway.

"It’s been working really well. It's my match preparation," Bertens said. "It’s done in 2, 3, maybe 5 minutes. It's always a relaxing time before my match."

The 26-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2018, winning titles in Charleston, Cincinnati and Seoul, before making her WTA Finals debut in Singapore, where she reached the semifinals.
