The Greeks Make History

Compatriots Stefanos Tsitsipas and Maria Sakkari made history by becoming the first Greek players on the ATP and WTA to win trophies in the very same week after capturing Rabat and Estoril, respectively.

Cristian Garin Continues Winning on Clay

Before 2019, 22-year-old Garin had only one ATP win. In Munich, he dethroned two-time defending champion Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals en route to his second title of the season. Within a year, he’s jumped from No. 214 to a career-high ranking of No. 33.

Qualifier Conquers Prague

Jil Teichmann claimed her maiden title, triumphing over Karolina Muchova in the championship match, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4. The 21-year-old Swiss had never reached a WTA quarterfinal before entering Prague.

No Germans in Munich Final Four

Before the 2019 edition of the BMW Open, the Germans had won five of the last seven titles on their home soil. This year, however, none of the them reached the semifinals.

First-Time Finalists

The Prague Open, which in the past has been won by big names and home favorites such as Petra Kvitova, Karolina Pliskova and Lucie Safarova, saw two unknowns—Jil Teichmann and Karolina Muchova—reach the final. It was the first WTA final played by two first-time finalists since July of 2018.
