A 26-time Grand Slam champion in doubles and mixed doubles, Elizabeth Ryan was born this week 127 years ago on February 5, 1892. Her legacy as one of the sport’s greatest champions and her record-breaking success at Wimbledon still live on more than a century later.

With 19 Wimbledon titles in 20 years, total 190 victories, Ryan ranks third in all-time victories at the All England Club. The California native and her longtime partner Suzanne Lenglen had a spotless 31-0 record at the Championships.

The only players to surpass Ryan in Wimbledon crowns have been Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King. King accomplished the feat in 1979 when she paired up with Navratilova to win her 20th Wimbledon crown. They won the final to break Ryan’s 45 year record just one day after Ryan’s passing on July 6, 1979. King won Wimbledon four times in mixed doubles, six times in singles, and 10 times in doubles. Navratilova won her 20th Wimbledon in 2003 in the mixed event.

Ryan was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1972.
