A troll in Central Park: Medvedev takes on new role

There is a new troll in Central Park (well, technically, Flushing Meadows), and his name is Daniil Medvedev. After his four-set win over Feliciano Lopez on Friday night, the Russian gave the raucous Louis Armstrong crowd one of the best quotes in recent memory.

“When you sleep tonight, I want you to know I won this match because of you,” he told the jeering fans.

He had lost the crowd's support when he angrily snatched a towel from a ball person's hands, argued with the umpire over the code violation and then raised a middle finger subtly to the stadium.

The 23-year-old would later reflect on his actions.

"I was an idiot, to be honest," he said. "I did some things that I'm not proud of and that I'm working on to be a better person on the court because I do think I'm a good person [off] the court."

But then on Monday, Medvedev continued to troll the crowd after his four-set win over qualifier Dominik Koepfer when he strutted his stuff en route to the net for the post-match handshake.

Medvedev simply can’t stop taunting the US Open crowds. He seems to relish the boos, and claims they make him stronger.

“Today I was losing 6-3, 3-0, I was painful in my adductor before the match, I thought I was not going to play,” he told the crowd. “But you guys, being against me, gave me so much energy to win… thank you!”

Medvedev will face Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals on Tuesday and the tennis world eagerly awaits the next chapter in his shocking heel turn.
