American Roundup: Brady leaps into Top 30

With the New York bubble officially popped, Baseline is back with a weekly look at the American players who made the biggest waves. Here are the top American movers and shakers as the tours head to Europe:

Semifinalist, US Open

Brady had a career breakthrough in New York with a run all the way to the semifinals. She challenged eventual champion Naomi Osaka in a three-setter and was rewarded with a jump  of 16 ranking places to get her to No. 25, marking her first time inside of the Top 30.

Quarterfinalist, US Open

A few weeks removed from a third-set tiebreak upset over Serena Williams in Lexington, Rogers came into New York with confidence. She’d reach the quarterfinals (her second time going this far following Roland Garros in 2016) on the heels of a third-set tiebreak win over Petra Kvitova. She’s now back up to No. 55.

Semifinalist, US Open

While anything but Grand Slam No. 24 was going to be a disappointment for Serena, she was part of a group of super moms to make headlines at the US Open. She'd beat newest mom Tsvetana Pironkova in the quarterfinals and then lose to fellow mom Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals.

Round of 16, US Open

Tiafoe quietly had a great fortnight in New York before being stopped by Daniil Medvedev. After losing in the first round of "Cincy" to Andy Murray, Tiafoe bounced back with wins over Andreas Seppi, John Millman and Marton Fucsovics. The American jumps 16 places to No. 66 as he looks to inch back inside of the Top 50 once again.

Third round, US Open

The 21-year-old stirred up a lot of excitement in New York with his incredible mullet and stellar play. He’d get his first career major win and follow it up with his second before falling to Medvedev. The former Ohio State Buckeye is closing in on the Top 100 with a new career-high of No. 120.
