American Roundup: Robin Montgomery sweeps at the US Open

Every week, American players from the ATP and WTA tours step up to the plate around the world. Here are the top American movers and shakers that shined brightest this week:

1. Robin Montgomery

Girls Singles and Doubles Champion, US Open (New York, NY)

On Saturday, Montgomery became the first American since 2017 to win the US Open girls singles title. At 17-years-old, she took down Kristina Dmitruk from Belarus 6-2, 6-4. However, the American wasn’t content winning just one title. Later that day, she partnered with Ashlyn Krueger to take home the girls doubles title. Montgomery, a USTA Foundation Excellence Program standout, is now the first American since Lindsay Davenport in 1992 to sweep the girls singles and doubles titles at the major event.

2. Desirae Krawczyk

Mixed Doubles Champion, US Open (New York, NY)

Krawcyzk made history on Saturday at the US Open, winning the mixed doubles title with partner Joe Salisbury. The Arizona State product now becomes the seventh player in the Open Era to win three of four mixed doubles Grand Slam titles in a single season.

3. Coco Gauff and Caty McNally

Doubles Finalists, US Open (New York, NY)

Both Gauff and McNally, who have been playing doubles together for a few years, (having won three WTA titles together), reached their first Grand Slam doubles final of their careers. Along the way, they knocked out three seeded teams without dropping a set, including the No. 1 seeds Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens. The pair came up just short against Samantha Stosur and Zhang Shuai in a final that went the distance.
