The Chair Drill will teach you to hit and recover when your opponent places a challenging shot into the corner. Set up the ball machine to feed deep to one corner and place a chair at the center of the baseline. Make sure there is enough time between feeds so you have time for two sprints, one out to the ball and one back to your starting position to the left of the chair. You will need to sprint around the chair between shots, which will force you to take small steps and turn properly.

Work on reversing your momentum back toward the center of the court as you hit the ball, rather than continuing to run into the doubles alley. Taking extra steps after your swing will cost you valuable time.

Vary between hitting a deep crosscourt drive and a high, looping shot down the line. You want to elevate the ball and hit it deep so that you’ll have enough time to recover. If you hit the ball too short, you won't make it back into position.

As you improve, you can increase the difficulty by decreasing the time between feeds on the machine.
