Umm … so that happened.

In Rome, David Goffin beat Tomas Berdych, 6-0, 6-0. Berdych career accolades include: 2010 Wimbledon finalist, career semifinalist at the other three Slams, perennial Top 10 player, two-time Davis Cup champion, title winner on all surfaces, 2005 Paris Masters champion and six-time ATP World Tour Finals participant.

Wait. What?

It had been 11 years since a Top 10 player was double-bageled. Granted, Goffin had a career year in 2016, but Berdych was still playing at his usual level of consistency heading into this match. (Since his Top 10 debut in July 2010, Berdych has only spent one week outside of that prestigious grouping, in October this year.)

It clearly wasn’t Berdych’s day in this round-of-16 encounter: They played a total of 65 points and Goffin won 50 of them, at a 77 percent clip. And obviously Berdych failed to convert any of the three break points he earned.

You can never be too sure of what will happen between the lines.
