US Open Poster 2024tx

The Roland Garros finals may be right around the corner as tennis fans start looking ahead to Wimbledon—but for New Yorkers, it’s already time to plan for the US Open.

Tickets went on sale to the general public this week and with temperatures in the city finally feeling like summer, the countdown to the last Grand Slam of the season is officially on.

To celebrate the 144th edition of the event, the US Open selected artist and graphic designer Chelsey Farris to create the 2024 poster based on this year’s art theme, The Power of Tennis.

The colorful and dynamic artwork is a “scalable and adaptable” design composed of 16 unique tennis balls—each one representing an impactful element of tennis, from “community” to “tradition” to “entertainment” and more.

“Developing an identity for ‘The Power of Tennis’ meant designing a theme that resonates uniquely with each fan—a tennis ball might represent an escape from reality, a fun pastime, a lifelong purpose or a cherished childhood memory,” Farris said according to a press release.

“By crafting various vignettes within the tennis balls, I aimed to capture these diverse emotions while adding versatility.”

The primary poster features four of these unique tennis balls set against the US Open’s signature blue and green court. The balls represent health and wellness, New York City, diversity and inclusion, and tradition—a fitting mix to represent the venerable tournament, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of equal prize money last year.

The poster and the art will be seen in art, merchandise and marketing materials, as well as throughout the grounds at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

“Creating the theme art for the US Open is the type of project that fuels my love for design—not just for its scale, but for its significance to a diverse and passionate fanbase,” said artist Farris.

“Instead of a single static layout, I developed a scalable design system adaptable to multiple touchpoints, allowing the work to be repurposed in innovative ways. It has been a thrilling challenge and a privilege.”
