NEW YORK—Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is feeling right at home in Flushing Meadows.

Despite an anticlimactic opening round against an injured Dominik Koepfer, Alcaraz treated the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd to a little of everything in his on-court interview with Brad Gilbert.

“This is a court I love playing in,” he said to cheers. “When I first stepped on the court, I felt great. I felt amazing, the same energy that I felt last year. It was a great start of the match and I felt really well.”

At just 20 years old, Alcaraz is well on his way to becoming one of the sport’s new style icons—landing him deals with the likes of Louis Vuitton, score a cover issue of the Wall Street Journal and, on Tuesday night, saw him showing off his Nike Mac Attack sneakers that would make Frances Tiafoe jealous on Tuesday.

“I’m a huge fan of sneakers,” beams the young Spaniard, who captured his second Grand Slam title earlier this summer at Wimbledon. “McEnroe wore these when he was playing, so I’m really happy to have them and to show them to the world.”

Ahead of his second round against South African Lloyd Harris, he also had time to pay tribute to friend Sebastian Yatra, whom the top seed go to know in the run-up to the US Open. After pairing with the Grammy Award-winning singer during the “Stars of the Open” exhibition for Ukraine, Yatra was in attendance for Alcaraz’s first match of his title defense.

Alcaraz returned the favor by belting out a bit of Yatra’s hit song, “Vagabundo.”
