When you're Roger Federer, you have a full-blown birthday celebration two weeks after the actual marking of your 36th year on this planet. And you certainly say yes when Vogue editor-in-chief pal Anna Wintour offers to put your party up in a tony Manhattan restaurant bar, later to splash images of the starry night on her magazine's website.

Jon Hamm. Hugh Jackman. Vera Wang. Ralph Lauren. Trevor Noah. Charlie Rose. Huma Abedin. Many others. And, of course, Vogue.

Just a few of the famous names affixed to this event, which went off without a hitch, as if ever there were a doubt, at the Beekman luxury hotel's Augustine restaurant. The fete produced an eagerly grinning birthday boy, happy-to-be-here guests aplenty and one fabulously gaudy, tennis-themed cake:

There were words. Certainly from the man of the hour, but also from his hostess. Wintour spoke affectionately of her friend Federer, for whom she recently penned a first-person piece for TENNIS, in which she name-dropped nearly every conceivable thing linked between them:

"I’ve spent nearly as much time with him at runway shows as I have sitting in his box at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Over the years, he’s been my guest at Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Versace and Alexander McQueen. A decade ago, he and Mirka memorably joined me at Oscar de la Renta’s show on the Monday morning after Roger won his fourth US Open; the entire room, which is to say the entire fashion world, gave him a standing ovation."

All in all, Federer's bash serves as a welcome reminder that these stars of stage, screen, style and sport live different lives. And so be it. To Roger himself, tennis observers have this tardy greeting: Happiest birthday, and we'll see you on the courts.
