Chan, who played with Hingis for the first time last year, was in need of a new partner as the Swiss Hall of Famer announced her retirement just before the WTA Finals. The last match for Chan and Hingis was a loss at the hands of Babos and Hlavackova.
After the US Open last year, Babos and Hlavackova went on a run, winning four of their last five tournaments. Their only defeat in that stretch was a final-round loss to Chan and Hingis in Beijing. During that time, too, Babos—who plays a full singles schedule—reached the championship match in Quebec and Tashkent.
As Hlavackova notes in the Instagram post, playing with another full-time doubles specialist will have its benefits, saying they’ll “really have the same motivation and goals.”
The new team will make its debut in Brisbane, where Hlavackova won the title with fellow Czech Lucie Hradecka in 2010. Hlavackova and Chan are both two-time finalists at the Australian Open.
