I guess you could say Chris Eubanks saw this coming.

Eubanks shocked the tennis world by stunning No. 5 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets to reach his first Wimbledon quarterfinal, but for the 27-year-old, it was all part of a plan he outlined to fellow Americans Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton.

“I’m not one of those big history, all about the tradition,” he told Tiafoe and Shelton on the first episode of Ultimate Tennis Showdown’s All on the Table. “I don’t really care about that, but from a global standpoint, [making the quarterfinals at Wimbledon] means you’re getting one of those matches on Centre Court. It is one of those places you want to play.”

Eubanks, who was moonlighting as a Tennis Channel analyst earlier in the season. didn’t always dream so big. Just four months ago, reaching the Top 100 was a singular obsession. Once he achieved that overdue milestone with an emotional run to the Miami Open quarterfinals, the Top 20—and beyond—suddenly felt in reach.

“I’ve never played main draw of Wimbledon, so we’ll see what it’s like when I go,” he explained, ranking the All England Club behind his home Slam at the US Open and the Australian Open.

“But to be able to tell people that don’t know tennis, ‘I made the quarterfinals at Wimbledon’…granted, it’s not Serena. I don’t have seven of them, but still, quarterfinals of Wimbledon is a different level of respect. You make the quarterfinals of the French Open and it’s ‘That’s cool,’ or quarters of the Australian Open? ‘That’s dope.’

“But quarterfinals of Wimbledon? You know, the Wimbledon? From the movie? The bad tennis movie? You know Wimbledon.”

And now fans know Eubanks, who moves up to a projected ranking of No. 31 and books a Miami Open quarterfinal rematch with former No. 1 Daniil Medvedev on Centre Court.
