Coco Gauff lands on People magazine's Most Intriguing list for 2023

US Open champion Coco Gauff is the most interesting woman in the world. Or one of them anyway, at least according to People magazine.

This week, Gauff joined stars like Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Ryan Gosling, Margo Robbie and Taylor Swift and earned selection to the magazine's "Most Intriguing People of the Year."

"From newly minted A-listers to timeless forces of nature, these stars kept us talking in 2023," the magazine contends, and its staff writes that Gauff's crowing moment in Queens, where she became the youngest American woman to win her home Grand Slam event in more than 20 years, helped cement her spot on the list.

"After turning heads at age 15 with a first-round win over Venus Williams at Wimbledon in 2019, the question was when — not if — Gauff would earn her first Grand Slam trophy," the magazine wrote. "This turned out to be the year, as the former world No. 1 junior dominated the 2023 US Open, making her the youngest American champion since Serena Williams in 1999.

"But Gauff is still in disbelief she’s carrying the sisters’ mantle. 'I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it. They’re my idols,' she told People earlier this year, adding, 'I’m just a person who plays tennis.'"

Gauff's humble outlook and good humor also shown through in her reaction to her selection.

"lol good to know @people thinks i'm intriguing. I'm really not," she wrote on Instagram. "I just like to crochet, watch anime, and play fortnight [sic] all day when I am not practicing or working. but I appreciate the shoutout haha. it's pretty cool being on this list among actual intriguing people."

In a week in which she was also crowned as the world's highest-paid female athlete, Gauff was one of two sports stars to break through the X of A-list celebrities along with retired soccer star David Beckham.
