It’s officially that time on the professional tennis calendar again, when the postseason starts to blur into the preseason.

But maybe we should just be calling this “exhibition events season”, because with some of the biggest names in tennis descending on Abu Dhabi for the World Tennis League this week, it’s clear that players aren’t slowing down—they’re revving up.

Before the tournament kicked off on Thursday, diehard Formula 1 fan Daniil Medvedev took advantage of the opportunity to visit one of the world’s most recognizable race tracks, the Yas Marina Circuit.

Last month, the circuit played host to the final round of the Formula 1 World Championship, which saw Red Bull’s Max Verstappen win the race and secure the title of 2023 champion.

But this time it was the tennis players who were suiting up to race, with Medvedev accompanied by good friend Andrey Rublev as the pair got a tour of the facilities—and, of course, a test drive.

“Two Daniils!” Medvedev wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, as he snapped a picture with Russian driver Daniil Kvyat.

The world No. 3 posted up a storm on social media as he checked out the Yas Marina Circuit’s garage, learned all the technical details of the Formula 1 venue and took to the track with Rublev.

It’s not the first time these two have been off to the races together: The pair got a behind-the-scenes look at the Barcelona Grand Prix earlier in the season, where they got to hang out in the Ferrari garage and rub elbows with sports stars like Robert Lewandowski and Joao Felix.

The pair are set to end the year at the World Tennis League playing for the “Eagles”, joined by fellow Russian WTA player Mirra Andreeva and former Australian Open champ Sofia Kenin.

“After seeing what the players experienced last year, I’m delighted to be joining for this season of the World Tennis League in Abu Dhabi,” Medvedev said in a statement. “I’ve played several times in the UAE and always enjoy coming back, and I’m aiming to finish this year on a positive note there.”

The World Tennis League will also feature a stacked field that includes three of the WTA’s Top 5 in world No. 1 Iga Swiatek, No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 4 Elena Rybakina, as well as top ATP players including world No. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas, No. 10 Taylor Frit, Casper Ruud, and Grigor Dimitrov.

The exhibition tournament will take place from December 21 to 24 at Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena. The 2024 pro tennis season is set to kick off a few days later at the United Cup from December 29 to January 7 in Brisbane, Perth and Sydney, Australia.
