CINCINNATI, Ohio—How high is your RawQ?

Daniil Medvedev could attribute his energetic win in the opening round of the Western & Southern Open to a new line of energy bars created by wife Daria Medvedeva and co-founder Arina Kuzmina.

“It’s ‘Raw-Q,’ otherwise we’re talking about Dwayne ["The Rock"] Johnson,” joked the former world No. 1 after knocking out Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets.

Though RawQ first hit the market earlier this summer, Medvedev admitted he has been at the forefront of testing the product, created with him in mind, since it was first conceived over two years ago.

“If you can remember around five years ago, I was only eating bananas,” he said of his mid-match refuel. “A lot. I think I’m someone whose blood sugar can be a little bit up and down, so if I don’t eat, I have problems.

“But I was feeling limited by the banana, like it was not the perfect choice, so I started searching around for different energy bars. Some of them were good, but not perfect.”

Enter Daria, a former player, now mother-turned-businesswoman, and friend Kuzmina, an integrative health coach.

“My wife thought it was an interesting topic, and decided to make the perfect bar, not only for me, but also to sell it and make it a big product.”

Medvedev was only too happy to serve as primary taste-tester through the development phase, and is now RawQ’s lead endorsee, featuring prominently on the brand’s website and social pages. He even offered up signed racquets as a pre-order sign-up prize.

“I love them, and I’m eating them, but it’s been an even bigger hustle for them, something like two or three years of hard work to make it happen. I’ve been eating them for some time, but at some of the tournaments where we hadn’t announced it yet, I was mixing them with other brands.

“Now I can only eat them,” he adds with a smile, “and hopefully it’ll become a big thing!”

After refueling from his match with Musetti, Medvedev will again put his RawQ to the test when he faces No. 16 seed Alexander Zverev for a chance to reach his sixth Masters 1000 quarterfinal of the season.
