On the eve of the 15th anniversary of her 2004 Wimbledon title, Maria Sharapova exited in the first round to world No. 88 Pauline Parmentier. It's made even more disappointing because Sharapova didn't even finish the match, retiring while down 4-6, 7-6 (4), 5-0 with a left forearm injury.
"I've had a history of a tendon in my left forearm flaring up. It happened today in the second set," Sharapova said. "I probably couldn't have gotten through the whole final set, but I did my best."
The loss is another setback for the five-time Grand Slam champion, who has played just five events in 2019 due to a right shoulder injury.
