Kudla Retires

Denis Kudla played the final match of his career on Saturday, teaming up with Desirae Krawczyk to complete a 3-0 sweep for the eventual champions United States over the Czech Republic in the United Cup semifinals.

The following morning, the American reflected on his journey to this point with a thank you note to tennis.

“I could have never imagined what this life could give me and where it has brought me,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “A blonde haired, backwards hat wearing kid from the DMV going on to be a professional tennis player for 16 years! I am forever grateful to this sport I love.”

As a junior, Frances Tiafoe looked up to Kudla as a source of inspiration after watching someone from the same community break into the Top 100 and compete on the Grand Slam stage. Tiafoe, now a two-time US Open semifinalist, paid tribute to the former world No. 53 by crediting him for paving the way.

“I really appreciate you bro, More than can ever imagine. You truly helped me believe that being a pro can be a reality,” he published. “Thanks for giving me game and support as a youngin and still to this day. Nothing but love for you baldhead Kudla.”

Kudla’s strongest results came on grass, highlighted by an 8-8 record in Wimbledon main draws that included a 2015 fourth-round showing (he finished 26-26 overall at the tour level on the surface). The 32-year-old picked up nine ATP Challenger Tour crowns throughout his career and represented Team USA at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“I want to thank everyone who made this ride something special for me, no matter how big or small the role in my life,” he said. “Every memory will be something that I cherish forever and will always be proud of.”
