A short-backswing, high-control shot you should add to your arsenal is the offensive half volley. Most players think of the half volley as a purely defensive shot, a quick reaction when in trouble. But it can be a deliberate, aggressive play as well.
If you’re at the baseline and see that one of your opponents is in trouble and will likely hit a short ball, step up, shorten your backswing and hit the ball just as it comes off the court. You don’t need to swing hard. What you give up in power, you’ll gain in control and time.
When hitting this shot, keep your head still and focused on the point of contact for a step or two after striking the ball. Fight the urge to pop up, because if you do, the ball will come up with you.
