Doubles Take: Players enter Canada on a winning streak

Both tours are in Canada right now for one of the crown gems of the summer stretch, the Rogers Cup, and some of the players have entered the event with momentum on their side.

Here’s a look at some of them, who’ll try to keep their winning streaks going.

CAPITAL GAINS FOR MURRAY & SOARES

Former US Open champions Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares have gotten their hard-court preparations off to a perfect start. The duo won the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., over Mike Bryan and Edouard Roger-Vasselin for their second title of the year.

In Toronto, Murray and Soares—seeded sixth—will open up play against the dangerous pairing of Nikola Mektic and Alexander Peya. Bryan, meanwhile, will be reuniting with Jack Sock. The fourth seeds will face the winner of the match between Feliciano Lopez/Marc Lopez and Daniel Nestor/Vasek Pospisil, in what will be the last tournament of Nestor’s legendary career.

A TURNING POINT FOR CHAN?

Last year, Latisha Chan had one of the best doubles campaigns the WTA had seen this millennium. With her partner Martina Hingis retiring, though, she had yet to find much success this year aside from winning the mixed doubles title at the French Open. She finally won a title this year, taking the crown in San Jose, Calif., with Kveta Peschke.

Next up for the champs is Montreal—though not with each other. Chan is seeded second with Ekaterina Makarova, while Peschke will be teaming up with her regular partner Nicole Melichar, with whom she reached the finals at Wimbledon.

KEEPING THAT WINNING FEELING

Though they’re not playing this week in Canada, Roman Jebavy and Andres Molteni ended the ATP’s clay-court season as champions in Kitzbuhel, Austria.

Another team not playing this week also gets to enjoy that champions’ glow for a while longer: At the women’s edition of the Citi Open, Darija Jurak and Xinyun Han took home the title—their first together.
