Doubles Take: Who will be the first finalists?

Here’s your daily dose of Doubles Take, breaking down team play at the US Open.

In this day and age, there’s only one way to celebrate a berth in the US Open semifinals.

CoCo Vandeweghe and Ashleigh Barty put their best floss dance forward after defeating Dalila Jakupovic and Irina Khromacheva in straight sets to reach the final four of a  Slam together for the first time. Singles might be over for the two, but they’ve found a nice spot in the second week of the tournament.

More semifinal spots will be determined on Wednesday, along with the first finalists of the tournament. Here’s a look at three matches on the schedule.

Maximo Gonzalez/Nicolas Jarry vs. Mike Bryan/Jack Sock (3): One of three unseeded teams in the men’s quarters, Gonzalez and Jarry have had an excellent run this tournament as they’ve reached the last eight at a major for the second time in 2018. “Team Brock,” though, has more firepower and experience as they eye their second Slam of the year.

Christina McHale/Christian Harrison vs. Bethanie Mattek-Sands/Jamie Murray: Familiarity off the court has made for a fun time on it for McHale and Harrison.

They’re on the verge of a first Slam final for either of them, but face a difficult task against the experienced duo of Mattek-Sands and Murray, each of whom own multiple mixed majors. It should be an entertaining battle, nonetheless.

Barbora Krejcikova/Katerina Siniakova (1) vs. Elise Mertens/Demi Schuurs (7): Based on the fact that they’ve won two Slams in ’18, you’d have to consider Krejcikova and Siniakova the team of the year. If there’s one person that’s stood out so far this year, though, it’s Schuurs, the tour’s title leader. Slam success hasn’t happened yet for the young Dutchwoman: She and Mertens have the opportunity for a statement-making win here.
