On the red clay in Marrakech, Morocco, Kyle Edmund made his first ATP final by beating Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-4, blasting 11 aces along the way.

But the point of the match came at 3-3 in Set 2, when Gasquet drew Edmund into the net with a backhand drop-shot that nearly died in the dirt. Edmund, sliding into the ball, subsequently punched a forehand back to Gasquet, who was caught in no man's land.

This left the Frenchman no choice but to try to lunge and lob Edmund with a backhand volley from feet in front of the baseline, which he miraculously pulled off, sending the Brit running toward the back fence.

By the time the Edmund had caught up with the ball, his opponent had already advanced to the net, ready for just about anything that could be thrown at him from such a bad position.

Edmund, though, where a showier player might have gone for a tweener, hit a one-handed backward backhand (His normal backhand uses two hands.) that sailed past Gasquet and dove just inside the sideline to win the point.

2018 has been a big year so far for Edmund. With his Australian Open semifinal, he saw his ranking rise from No. 49 to No. 26. In early March, he took over as the British No. 1 when an out-of-comptetition Andy Murray fell below him.

The 23-year-old plays his maiden final on Sunday against Pablo Andujar, who won this tournament twice, in 2011 and 2012, back when it was played in Casablanca.
