Has hell frozen over? It looks like the answer is “JA!”

An eagle-eyed tennis fan spotted bourgeoning besties Holger Rune and Casper Ruud practicing in Toronto ahead of the National Bank Open, a remarkable development given their tense on-court rivalry.

Real heads will remember their infamous 2022 Roland Garros quarterfinal, a match that seemingly begun at net when Ruud rolled his eyes at Rune’s ostensibly subpar handshake, and continued in the press over a bizarre 48 hours that featured accusations from both Ruud and Rune’s parents regarding post-match locker room antics.

The enduring accusation came from Rune’s camp, which claimed that Ruud approached Rune after the match and yelled “JA!” (or “YES!”) in his face, an accusation Ruud emphatically denied.

“I don’t know Holger personally, but I have seen on TV that sometimes there can be a lot of drama. He’s young and new, so that’s excusable, but when you’re on a big stage, it might be time to grow up a bit”, he told Norwegian daily VG at the time.

The pair have faced off multiple times since—including a Roland Garros rematch that Ruud won in far less dramatic fashion in June—and Rune himself hinted that there had been something of a thaw in the 12 months since their Scandinavian scrimmage.

“Obviously there was drama last year,” he said in Paris. “We played each other in Rome. It was a good match, I think.

“He's a good player. I respect him. There's no problem. We're good. Should be a match without problems, hopefully. Just looking forward for it.”

Where might this practice lead for the tour’s formerly feuding families? An appearance in a doubles draw? Tickets to see The Weeknd?

When coming from a place of Ja, it appears all things are possible.
