Unfortunately, Mardy Fish’s tennis racquets aren’t coming out of their bag next week. On Friday, the American withdrew from World TeamTennis in West Virginia due to injury.

Starting Monday, the 38-year-old was going to suit up for the New York Empire as one of two comeback fan favorites alongside Kim Clijsters. Though he retired in 2015, the former world No. 7 has been active in the tennis world as the U.S. Davis Cup captain and as a regular star for New York over the past three years.

Fish last appeared on court on March 1 as a substitute while he was coaching the WTT Celebrity All-Star Match.

The good news for WTT is that the withdrawal is not COVID-19 related. Injuries are bound to happen as players are returning to competition after months of layoff. Milos Raonic withdrew due to personal reasons, while Frances Tiafoe was deemed ineligible after testing positive. Tommy Paul replaces Tiafoe on the Washington Kastles, while Raonic and Fish won’t be replaced.

Fish happens to be a phenomenal golfer and starting on Friday he's meant to play in Lake Tahoe for the American Century Championship.

The star-studded golf charity event is raising money for COVID-19 relief and features James Blake, Stephen Curry, Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo Alvarez, Charles Barkley, Tony Romo and more celebrities.

It's a double shame Fish won't be in West Virginia this month given the The Greenbrier boasts multiple golf courses.
