Four can't-miss French Open first rounds

Roland Garros 2018 is about to begin, and, by the luck of the draw, several players primed for potentially big runs have been pitted against one another in the first round.

Here are some must-see matches to check out early on:

Edmund announced himself as a serious player in January with his run to the semifinals of the Australian Open. He's has since had some success on the clay, his preferred surface, making his first ATP final and getting wins versus Novak Djokovic and David Goffin to reach a career-high ranking of No. 17.

De Minaur, 19 years old and possibly the next big thing from Australia, has also broken through and beaten some highly established players this year. He's at his best-yet ranking as well, with 106.

Edmund won their recent match in Estoril 6-2, 7-5.

Querrey, the world No. 13 and a Wimbledon semifinalist, might seem like a heavy favorite at first glance, but the surface could be a balancing factor in favor of the 20-year-old.

Tiafoe has gone 5-3 on clay this year, including a run to the final in Estoril. Querrey, on the other hand, is due for a win. He hasn't gotten one all clay season. This could be an opportunity for the up-and-comer to challenge Querrey, 30, for the role of being a top American man.

Vandeweghe is always one to watch in Grand Slam play, but her success on clay this year, combined with her first-round opponent, makes this match particularly intriguing. The American went on a tear in Stuttgart in to make the final April, beating Sloane Stephens, Simona Halep, Caroline Garcia and, yes, Siegemund—6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

That was at Seigemund's best tournament, too; she won there in 2017 and was the runner-up in 2016. Neither player has gone very far at the French Open yet, but their track records indicate that they could be ready if their games are on.

As a No. 2 seed whose best surface isn't clay, Wozniacki can't feel too comfortable getting Collins, who's shot up the rankings the spring from No. 117 to No. 44. Collins has never played Roland Garros before, but she won 5 of her 7 matches in Madrid and Rome.

Wozniacki, though she hasn't won a title since the Australian Open, has been winning a lot more matches than she's been losing, so fans could be in for a Round 1 thriller.
