We’re guaranteed an American finalist in the 2024 US Open. Who will it be?

Frances Tiafoe deserves a ton of credit for knocking off players like Ben Shelton, Alexei Popyrin and Grigor Dimitrov, but looks like a cakewalk compared to what Fritz has dealt with in Flushing Meadows. He had to face an in-form Matteo Berrettini in the second round (won in straight sets), three-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud in the round of 16 (won 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2), and Alexander Zverev, who has been as good as anyone all throughout 2024 (won 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3)).

Fritz has reached a level that Tiafoe hasn’t in this tournament. He is dialed in with his serve, and he seems to come up with big deliveries even when he backs himself into trouble. But it’s his returning and baseline play that have allowed him to get further than ever at a major. Fritz is doing a really good job of using his length to get serves back, and his movement along the baseline has been remarkable. Fritz used to be a bit stiff on the court, but he has worked hard to become a player that can win long points. He is also extremely dangerous from both wings now, which will be vital against Tiafoe.

Tiafoe doesn’t have a lot of holes in his game, but this match won’t give him the forehand-to-forehand advantage he had against Dimitrov. Fritz has one of the biggest forehands on tour, and he should look to target Tiafoe’s. Tiafoe has a good forehand, for sure, but it takes him some time to load up. If Fritz can send it to that side of the court with some speed, he can rush Tiafoe and make him uncomfortable. Fritz said himself after the Zverev match that he enjoys getting into backhand-to-backhand exchanges. Tiafoe won’t find much if he looks to get into some of those.

Overall, Fritz is just a little better as a server, and I think he has a slight edge in weaponry. Tiafoe is definitely a better mover, but this should be a match that Fritz wins. And I think he can cover a small game spread in the process.

Fritz has absolutely dominated this matchup in the past, so it wouldn’t be anything new to him. He’s 6-1 against Tiafoe in his career, and he lost their first-ever encounter. So that’s six consecutive wins for Fritz, and every single one of those matches was played on a hard court. One of them was a straight-set win at the Australian Open in 2022, so he has also done it on a big stage.

Pick: Fritz -3.5 Games (-119)
