An Olympic medal probably wasn’t listed on the Monfils-Svitolina wedding registry, but Elina Svitolina gladly took a bronze home for new husband Gaël Monfils after a successful week in Tokyo.

Svitolina bounced back from a disappointing defeat in the singles semifinal to Marketa Vondrousova and pulled off a dramatic comeback in the subsequent bronze medal match over Elena Rybakina, 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

“Impossible to describe these emotions,” the former world No. 3 wrote on her own Instagram, later adding, “Gave it my ALL for this.”

The Ukrainian has enjoyed an unforgettable summer that started when she married longtime partner Monfils just before making the trip to Tokyo. The two celebrated her Olympic accomplishment on his Instagram on Wednesday.

“When your wife brings [a] Bronze medal,” wrote the French star, who himself made a third appearance at the Olympic Games—having first debuted in Beijing back in 2008.

Country rules prohibited the pair from competing together in mixed doubles, but it’s clear the couple consider Svitolina’s bronze medal a shared victory as they prepare for the North American summer hard courts.
