Game, Set, Bet: Katie Volynets, who just won 6-0, 6-0, against Ashlyn Krueger

The Credit One Charleston Open field includes three Top 10 players this year, but it’s not a given that one of the favorites will win. There’s always a chance the abrupt move from hard courts to clay courts will trip up some of the top players in the world. On top of that, this field is deep with talented and accomplished players, so there are some middle-of-the-board options that should suprise no one if they prevailed.

"I definitely didn't anticipate the comeback being so successful and so early," Bencic confessed in Indian Wells, "but of course I'm going to take it."

Belinda Bencic (+800): Bencic was hot as can be to start the 2025 season with an impressive 18-6 record. The 28-year-old also won a title in Abu Dhabi, quickly becoming a factor in the women’s game after a maternity leave. Bencic has also success at this tournament in the past, winning it in 2022 and finishing runner-up in 2023. She likes these conditions and knows what it takes to win.

Now, we just need to see what Bencic has in her legs. For as good as she was to start the year, she got boatraced in a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Madison Keys in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells. Then, after a tough win over Dayana Yastremska at the Miami Open, she got rocked in a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Elina Svitolina. Is she coming crashing back down to earth, or will she regain her form in Charleston?

Daria Kasatkina (16-1): It’s a little surprising to see Kasatkina at 16-1 odds. The now-Australian star won this tournament in 2017 and was a runner-up here last year. Kasatkina also won more matches on clay than anybody outside of Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka in 2023, and she went 8-4 on dirt in 2024. Kasatkina’s crafty baseline game, effortless power and ability to win in a variety of different ways just plays well in these conditions. So, if you’re looking for a longer shot in this tournament, she could be worthy of a small-money play.

Diana Shnaider (20-1): Shnaider is off to a weird start to the 2025 season. After going 42-21 and winning four titles in 2024, the lefty crusher is just 7-8 this year. But she did just win a doubles title with Mirra Andreeva in Miami, and I wonder if something as small as that can get her back into a rhythm.

Shnaider’s game should theoretically mesh very well with these conditions. She’s a remarkable ball-striker, and the extra time clay affords her to set her feet makes her all the more dangerous. There’s a reason she’s 15-9 on clay in her career, and she won a clay-court title in Budapest last year. Don’t count her out as she looks to change her fortunes in South Carolina.
