Racquet: Tecnifibre TF40 ($259)

After battling injuries for two years, Opelka returned to the courts with a very noticeable change: a different racquet. A longtime Wilson Pro Staff user, Opelka recently switched to the TF40. In the off-season, he spent time with the Tecnifibre team in Florida, and after extensive testing, found the racquet to be a great fit.

“Obviously, my game is centered around my serve, so that was the biggest emphasis as I went through this process,” Opelka said after his hot start to the season in Brisbane. “But the biggest difference that I felt right away was on my ground strokes. I have more confidence to go after my shots and feel more solid on my returns. It gives me a lot of confidence when I feel good in my return and ground game so that I don’t have to rely as much on my serve.”

Now in its third generation, the TF40 has all the trappings of a true player’s frame. The constant RS section beam combines the control of a traditional box beam with the power of a more rounded shape. It results in highly controllable and predictable shots from all areas of the court. The frame is also foam-filled throughout for a dampened, yet connected response with an overall classic feel. It comes in three weights—290g, 305g, 315g—to suit different playing needs.

Apparel: Fila Backspin Short Sleeve Crew ($55) and Short ($55)

This stretchy top is constructed of moisture-wicking, anti-odor fabric. The color-blocking mesh paneling on the front and back provide extra ventilation and dryness to stay cool when conditions heat up. The contrast piping down the torso gives the piece added style.

The matching short is made from the same performance material, as well as sports the same color-blocking paneling and piping design. A drawstring waistband offers a customizable and comfortable fit. A 7-inch inseam provides just the right amount of length without getting in the way.

Shoes: Fila Axilus 3 ($130)

The Axilus is Fila’s all-around performance shoe. This third generation model has been updated to have a more streamlined and supportive fit, and improved comfort. The upper is a combination of breathable mesh and forefoot cage with reinforcement in high wear areas. It has a TPU midfoot stabilizer that gives the shoe good backbone when stressed in and out of cuts. The Energized cushioning in the midsole soaks up harsh court landings while propelling the foot into the next stride. The Evergrind outsole has a multidirectional tread pattern that offers a good blend of grip and give.
