Giuliana “Gugu” Olmos made history this past weekend by securing the Nottingham doubles title with Desirae Krawczyk. With the win, Olmos became the first Mexican woman in the Open era to win a WTA title.

Mexico's Victoria Rodriquez won a 125K Series title (which is the WTA's secondary level) in Mumbai two years ago (with Bibiane Schoofs).

Olmos and Krawczyk had reached two finals previously: Monterrey in 2018 and Acapulco earlier this year.

The University of Southern California alumna credits her college teammates in helping shape both her game and mental toughness.

“When I got to college I was average, everyone I was playing was better than me and that forced me to improve.” Olmos said. “All the women on my team pushed me to become better.”

With her win in Nottingham, the 26-year-old now sits at a career-high of No. 67 in the WTA doubles ranks.
