Andrey Rublev fans, breathe. The Russian has shared a positive health update to social media after he overcame illness and injury—plus an inspired Felix Auger-Aliassime—to lift the Mutua Madrid Open trophy on Sunday.

The 26-year-old left fans and media worried after he revealed just what it took to get to the title, his second ATP Masters 1000 of his career. Rublev came into the tournament on the back of a four-match losing streak in the wake of his controversial default in Dubai—but once he returned to his winning ways he reportedly began to suffer symptoms of illness, which seemed to set off a miserable chain of events.

“I'm still sick, and tomorrow I guess I will go to the hospital for a full check,” Rublev told press after the final.

“Don't know exactly what's going on, because I have been sick already for eight, nine days, and this is not normal… Normally all my life, if I was sick, it's two, three days, maximum… This time, first time I feel the worst in my life…

“Inside of me is full of medication!”

Across various post-match interviews, Rublev described struggling with an illness that left his throat “completely blocked”—forcing him to survive on “baby food” for a few days—as well as a headache, fever and insomnia. On top of that, Rublev says, a toe on his left foot also became swollen to the point that he could barely put on his shoes.

“The feeling is similar to when it's broken, I guess. So that's why they were putting anesthesia for me to don't feel it,” Rublev revealed.

Now, after some much needed rest, Rublev seems to have recovered from his ordeal as he shared his first social media update after his Madrid Open victory. The Russian was seen sporting a bandage on the fourth toe of his left foot in a group photo with doctors at a Sanitas medical center.

“Words can not explain how grateful (I) am to all (the) doctors at ‘Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Zarzuela,’” Rublev wrote in the caption. “You are amazing people and doctors, thank you for helping me to get healthy! (It) means a lot to me.”

In Madrid, Rublev completed a 180 turnaround by snapping his four-match losing streak in the best way possible: with a six-match winning run to the 1000-level title. Along the way, the 26-year-old took down two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and top American Taylor Fritz before defeating unseeded Auger-Aliassime 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the final.

Rublev, who features on the Thursday practice schedule in Rome, will be the No. 4 seed at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia with main draw ATP action starting on Wednesday. He awaits the winner of Emil Ruusuvuori and Marcos Giron in the second round.
