On Thursday, Simona Halep faltered in her quarterfinal match in Eastbourne. Up a set and 3-0, she would lose the match, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. All week long, the Romanian has been trying to find her feel on grass, dropping the opening sets in three-set wins over Ying-Ying Duan and Tsvetana Pironkova.

The world No. 2's loss to Wozniacki went down an eerily similar path to her heartbreaking loss to Jelena Ostapenko in the Roland Garros final.

Seeking her first Grand Slam title, Halep squeaked out the first set over the 20-year-old Latvian and stormed ahead 3-0 in the second. She then totally lost her grip on the momentum and the trophy, just like on Thursday against Wozniacki. It just goes to show, the match is never over until the very last point.

Halep was also on the verge of overtaking Angelique Kerber for the No. 1 spot—which would have made her the first Romanian No. 1 in WTA history—but now she will have to wait a while longer. Kerber lost to Johanna Konta in the quarterfinals, and has a mere 115 point lead.

Both Halep and Wozniacki were playing in their second matches of the day thanks to rain in Eastbourne. The win over Halep is a notable one for Wozniacki.

The Dane also lost to Ostapenko in Paris, but now has a semifinal to look forward to before turning her sights to Wimbledon.
