NEW YORK — Simona Halep may be the fifth-best player in the world, but there's still plenty the 24-year-old hasn't experienced. Last week she checked one more item off her list. She tried her first-ever roller coaster ride at the Cincinnati Kings Island theme park with her team, including coach and chief instigator Darren Cahill.

"First time in my life and never again," Halep said. "I felt that I'm dying... When I went there and that machine was going down, I felt that I'm dying. I said, 'Darren, never again.' He was laughing when I said. It was tough, but it was nice. Good experience."

She added that she didn't scream during the ride, opting instead to be scared into total silence.

The Romanian reached the semifinals of Cincinnati before arriving in New York. She topped Lucie Safarova 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday to advance to the US Open third round.
