Hot Shot: Hsieh baffles Osaka at the Miami Open

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Hsieh Su-Wei put on a show to oust top-seeded Naomi Osaka on Saturday. She needed all of her tricks and skills to pull out the 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 win.

After winning the first set, Osaka made the error of easing up. Given she had won 63 consecutive matches after taking the opening set, she felt confident for good reason.

"Sometimes when returning her serve in second set, I felt myself relaxing," Osaka said. "I thought I could serve it out anyways."

But Hsieh had reason to go for it. In their last match in the third round of the Australian Open, Hsieh was in full control, but let the upset slip away, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. Osaka went on to win the title.

"Last time I think she tried to change the rhythm on the match. This time I try to focus on myself more," the 33-year-old said. "I know I have leading a lot last time and I lose the match. I was thinking, no matter what happen, I focus what I need to do, then I try. I did it. It's very good what I do."

This marks the first time a women's top seed has lost so early in 35 years of the Miami Open.

"I was kind of immature today," Osaka said. "I went in thinking everything was on my racket. But, honestly, she has the ability to make winners when she wants to, as well. That was one of my main problems."

Hsieh will take on Caroline Wozniacki in the round of 16 on Monday.
