Though she was raised in Delray Beach, Fla. and calls it home, Coco Gauff's connection to Atlanta is almost as strong: She spent the first seven years of her life in Georgia's capital, and her father Corey played basketball at Georgia State University.

Now, Gauff is giving back to the city that helped raise her.

The 2022 Roland Garros finalist and Top 10 star has joined with an Emmy-nominated Atlanta native, The Last of Us star Storm Reid, to invest in the renovation of sports facilities at Brownwood Park, an under-resourced public park.

In partnership with the organization Art in the Paint and with Gauff's involvement, the park's four public tennis courts will be revitalized with an art installation that "will inspire creativity and foster community engagement." Art in the Paint is an Atlanta-based nonprofit organization whose "mission is to use art and athletics to promote a higher quality of life, mobilize communities and inspire equitable play," per its website.

On Sunday, Gauff was in Atlanta for the groundbreaking of the renovations.

While in Atlanta, Gauff played 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez in an exhibition at the Atlanta Open, an ATP 250 event. Gauff won the match, 6-3, 6-3, but the result was secondary.

“I mean, the support that we got today was insane," Gauff said afterwards, per a report by The Atlanta Voice. “They’ve made me the person who I am 100%. Moving from Atlanta to South Florida was a big change, but I love the culture here in the city.

"Being a Black woman in tennis and having the support from all the people in Atlanta means a lot to me truly.”

Gauff is expected to kick off her summer hard-court season in earnest next week at the Mubadala Citi DC Open, which begins on July 31. Gauff and fellow Top 10 players Caroline Garcia, Jessica Pegula and Maria Sakkari top the entry list at the WTA 500 event.
