Iga Swiatek has taken to the water after an unexpected injury ended her Internazionali BNL d’Italia title defense, sharing a calm, cool image to her Instagram story on Friday.

“To be ready for Roland Garros I need to recover right now,” she revealed in a statement provided by the tournament. “I'm going to take couple of days off. With my quarterfinal loss, I have also time to then practice right before the tournament.”

Pairing the pic with a GIF image of a recharging battery, Swiatek is enjoying a well-earned rest after a whirlwind clay swing saw her win a second Porsche Tennis Grand Prix title and reach her first final at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Looking to win at the Foro Italico for a second straight year, the world No. 1 suffered an acute leg injury in the quarterfinals against rival Elena Rybakina, retiring in the final set at two games apiece.

“At the end in the tiebreaker, I felt pain in my right thigh. It was, like, pretty sudden. At the beginning I didn't really know if it was serious or not,” she explained in her statement. “We did an examination with the physio afterwards. It shouldn't be anything serious, so I'm pretty positive that I'll be back soon.

“For sure I feel tired. Yesterday I think it was the right decision to stop playing because I felt pain when I was stretching, when I did, like, harder movements.”

Swiatek has been critical of the new schedule imposed by both the ATP and WTA tours, one that changed the tournaments in Madrid and Rome into two-week affairs that mirror the Sunshine Swing of Indian Wells and Miami, referencing late finishes and tough turnarounds in her Madrid runner-up speech and again in her statement.

“For me, the most important thing is to kind of play it safe and not exploit my body so much in such a difficult conditions, after having to play few matches in night session and after midnight.

“I'm happy right now to have few days off because since Stuttgart I wasn't really able to recover with that tight schedule that we have on WTA.”

Luckily for Swiatek, the three-time Grand Slam champion has proven herself among the best and most durable athletes on tour, and the Pole appears primed to emerge from these uncertain waters and put on a strong defense of her terre battue title in Paris.
