NEW YORK—Iga Swiatek at last came face to face with a living legend ahead of the US Open: the world No. 1 shared an overdue selfie with 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams ahead of what will likely be the American’s final major appearance.

Swiatek discussed how she was yet to meet Williams in person in her Media Day press conference after first speaking at length about her legacy at the National Bank Open.

“She's such a legend, she said last month. “And I'm pretty sad on one hand that I wasn't able to kind of play against her. And maybe I'm going to have a chance. But to kind of be on a tour where she was, you know, winning everything.

But on the other hand I would probably be the player that loses in quarterfinal against her, so I'm okay with that!”

The Pole acknowledged time to meet, much less play Williams was of the essence as she may not be on tour for much longer.

“I'm still planning to do that,” she said on Friday, still feeling starstruck. “Yeah, well, it hasn't happened yet, so I'll let you know. But, yeah, that's all.”

The reigning Roland Garros champion made good on her promise over the weekend, posting their meeting on social media along with a heartfelt tribute to Serena.

So...this is the highlight of my day,” she tweeted. “Congratulations on your amazing journey and legendary career @serenawilliams. Huge respect for everything that you have done for our sport.”

Swiatek will play her first match at the US Open on Tuesday, giving her time to catch Williams’ first-round encounter with Danka Kovinic on Arthur Ashe Stadium Monday night.
