Rising teen Taylor Fritz took in a little history in Rome. (Twitter/InteBNLdItalia)

On Wednesday, Taylor Fritz and Leonardo Mayer stepped away from the courts to go see Pope Francis hold mass. When you’re in Rome, a trip to the Vatican isn’t so far-fetched, despite how rare it may be to catch a glimpse of a Pope during one's lifetime.

Mayer lost in the first round to David Goffin, and Fritz fell in the first round of qualifying to veteran Radek Stepanek. Despite the early exit, the 18-year-old American took full advantage of being in the Eternal City with his girlfriend for the first time. Could it get any more romantic?

“It’s so different from what I’m used to with being from San Diego, and everything is so modern,” Fritz says in the Sky Sport video. “This is, like, so historical I guess you would say. I truly like it.”

Yes Taylor, Rome is pretty historical.
